Everything you need to know about La Garuste 2023
Grenache is a red grape variety famous for its roundness, sweetness, and aromas of red fruits and spices. It generally brings body and indulgence to wines. Its generous and elegant character is contrasted with varieties such as Syrah, creating balanced and refined wines.
Syrah, originating from the Rhône Valley, is distinguished by its depth and complexity, offering wines with a dense color and powerful tannic structure, with rich aromas of black fruits, blackberry, and blackcurrant, complemented by peppery and spicy notes.
Mourvèdre is a red grape variety that contributes to the structure and complexity of the wine. It can bring aromas of black fruits, spices, and sometimes animal notes.
The blend of these grape varieties brings great aromatic complexity to the wine. Grenache can bring aromas of red fruits and garrigue, Mourvèdre notes of black fruits, spices, and leather, and Syrah aromas of black fruits, pepper, and violet. This combination creates a rich and diverse aromatic bouquet. A beautiful balance of these grape varieties promises a surprising and innovative experience.
The harvesting processes for Syrah, Grenache, and Carignan grapes reflect a meticulous approach to ensure optimal grape quality.
For Syrah, manual harvesting is often preferred due to the tendency of clusters to ripen unevenly, requiring repeated passes for the selection of ripe grapes.
Grenache harvesting, which can be slightly anticipated to maintain balanced acidity, requires particular attention due to the fragility of its large clusters.
Mourvèdre has compact clusters that are medium to large, conical, narrow, and sometimes winged. Its berries are medium-sized, spherical in shape, blue-black in color. The particularity of this grape variety lies in its very late budding and great maturity. It’s a vigorous plant that adapts well to poor soils and tolerates southern winds. It’s very productive and therefore requires good pruning control. The beginning of the harvest takes place in late September, early October.
The harvest of these grapes is generally done at maturity, when sugar and acidity levels are optimal. The harvest is carried out mechanically but with respect for the products to preserve the quality of the grapes.
The creation of a rosé wine is an art that combines technical elements and the winemaker’s passion. To produce this delicate wine, two distinct methods are mainly used: bleeding and skin maceration, which are distinguished by their approach to color and aromas. The bleeding method begins with the maceration of red grapes, where the grapes remain in contact with their skins for a controlled duration. As the juice acquires shades of pink, a small amount is “bled” from the vat, thus creating a rosé wine. This method is characterized by its fresh and fruity character, which reflects the terroir and the original grape variety.
The skin maceration method, on the other hand, consists of macerating red grapes with their skins, thus creating a delicate extraction of color and aromas. The precise control of the maceration duration allows obtaining the desired pink hue. This method tends to produce rosé wines with more complex and intense aromas, while preserving their natural freshness.
